How many hours does a child spend sitting in the classroom or doing homework at home? Probably many hours and generally with the back bent or hunched, producing unnecessary tension in both muscles and joints.

Although culturally there is a belief that the mind is independent of our body, there is more and more research that confirms that thinking and learning do not depend on the brain only. The body and movement play a fundamental role in intellectual, emotional and learning processes.

Creativity, emotion, empathy, attention or curiosity are qualities that we normally associate with mind, and yet they have an interdependent relationship with our body.

The human body is designed for movement, which is of great importance in the development of psychomotor, intellectual, social and emotional skills of children. The habitual lack of movement affects the development of these skills and therefore their mood, vitality and well-being.

What are the benefits of Tai Chi in children development?

Taichi (Tai Ji) is a philosophical-practical principle from China, which when applied to martial arts is known as Tai Chi Chuan (Tai Ji Quan) where the word Chuan refers to 'fist' or compendium of martial techniques.

Through body exercises coordinated with breathing and meditative concentration, the practice of Taichi becomes a path of health, fulfillness and human development.

Regular practicing helps children develop an adequate body structure, activate psychomotor skills, tone bones and muscles, and develop proprioception, that is, the perception of the location, movement, action and force of body parts. It also improves physical balance, mental and emotional, and helps to self-know better from bodily sensations and to strengthen attention and learning capacity.

This inner work is very beneficial for the development of children, and can be applied from an early age. In addition, the interaction with peers during the activity, and practice at home, if parents also practice Taichi, has a great benefit in their emotional education, due to the sense of connection with their peers and family, and the values that derive from practice: empathy, perseverance, respect and mutual support.

What are Taichi classes for children like?

In Taichi classes aimed at children, we adapt the learning methodology to the psycho-motor skills of children.

Some of the exercises are presented like games in which they participate spontaneously and with high motivation. This allows them to quickly and playfully internalize learning processes that otherwise could become long and complex.

Games where animals are imitated, physical effort exercises, fist and leg techniques, coordinated sequences of movements and stretching, are part of physical training. In our classes, intense and dynamic physical training is combined with gentle and slow exercises, which helps them learn to adapt appropriately to moments of activity and relaxation.

The practice is based on a solid philosophical foundation, which develops in practice many of the qualities that define a complete and balanced human being, such as patience, tolerance, and respect for oneself and others.

In Taichi Chuan classes for children, openness of mind, creativity, perseverance, determination, self-confidence, intelligence, spontaneity and effort to achieve goals are also cultivated. All of these are qualities that, developed from childhood, help pave the way to a prosperous and balanced adult life.
